Missions / Objectives / Programs
OUR MISSION
Our mission is to provide direct and indirect services to disadvantaged middle and high school students and their families by increasing academics, attendance, behavior, self-worth, and leadership. Our goal is to reverse the cycle of crime, poverty, and educational underachievement through our Leadership Through Education curriculum and community partners.
OUR OBJECTIVE
The broad objective of Problem Solvers University (PSU) and its collaborative partners is to instill in youth the values of becoming, knowing, belonging, and giving.
PSU Mentoring Program Focuses on Students’ Success
Many, but not all of PSU students lack positive role models that are willing to help and guide them through "Life Struggles" in and out of school mainly due to the lack of fathers in the household. Most of our students live in an environment that does not offer the needed emotional or educational support from fathers that other students may have available to them. Dr. Moore's envision that all PSU students become motivated to attend college after high school and this commitment of PSU has a track record of making this happen. In fact, many of PSU students are the first in their family to go college, the military, and sometimes, even graduating out of high school. Our PSU Mentors offers high school students an avenue that allows them to express themselves without judgment and condemnation. We have highly experience motivatiors and strategic planners on-borad to accomplish PSU's overall mission and goals for each of our "Mentees".
ABOUT PSU
Founded by Dr. Carlos N. Moore in 2003, PSU has assisted over 10 high schools and 2 elementary schools with leadership training, counseling, referrals, mentoring, job placement, and scholarship development.
PSU serves disadvantaged and at-risk youth between the ages of 12 and 18 who live in socioeconomically depressed communities within Hillsborough County. These students receive coaching, mentoring, and leadership skills based on our PSU Education model. The areas of concentration include: school attendance, school behavior, academic achievement, self-esteem, and leadership. Parental involvement is also a requirement for student success in the program. Services include: one-on-one mentoring, school visits, home visits, health and wellness, college tours, and finacial responsibility.
PSU is dedicated to helping youth and parents take responsibility for their life, family, school and community. The PSU programs are designed to teach and reinforce positive personal development and leadership skills. Upon entry into PSU's Mentoring program, our students readily identify themselves as leaders by actively participating in our program design that values them and appreciates their ideas and participation. Their personal growth is enhanced when they are cared for and mentored by adults and staff who are positive role models and by having their leadership capability frequently validated.
PSU is also instrumental in the fight against illiteracy amongst our youth. Dr. Moore actively meet with Hillsborough county administrators to discuss the needs of disadvantage students. According to a recent Release from the Hillsborough County Public Schools, the county’s 2006-2007 graduation/dropout rates are among the highest in the State. A major contributing factor to this crisis is illiteracy.
PSU Statistics
As of January 13, 2023, Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) celebrated a graduation rate of 87.9% for the 2021-2022 academic year, a nearly two-point increase from pre-pandemic levels. This marks the first time since 2017 that HCPS students have outperformed the state graduation rate.
While graduation rates have declined across the state from last year, this was expected due to state officials waiving graduation requirements during the pandemic due to continued learning disruptions. HCPS students have excelled in key areas, showing tremendous growth in a five-year period:
-
African American students had a 1.6-point increase in graduation rates over the last five years.
-
Hispanic students achieved a 2.4-point graduation rate increase over the last five years.
-
Students with disabilities achieved a 4.9-point increase over the last five years, and a 3-point increase from pre-pandemic.
The improvement in high graduation is largely due to positive "Mentoring" and PSU is leading the charge in this area of student education. Dr. Moore is committed to see a 100% graduation rate because loosing just one student, except for some type of unavoidable event, is not justifiable at PSU.

PSU PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
#1 - Career Focus Program
It is here that we take each applicant from unemployment to employment and conduct follow-up to ensure that each client moves toward self-sufficiency. Employment and other options are based on initial assessment and options can range from assisting with first-time work experience to immediate employment or referral for vocational training or education. All of our students must attend a 1-day training seminar where they will learn or be refreshed about “Employability Skills.” Those with little or no work experience will be enrolled in our volunteer program and placed in the workplace for a minimum 30-days, if appropriate, to gain full time employment with that agency. We also help our members secure interviews and prepare résumés and applications by working closely with over 10-hiring agencies that Dr. Moore personally know. Most of the time, a phone call is all that it takes to get someone employed. Through collaboration with other community-based organizations, our members may receive assistance with transportation, childcare and clothing to ensure that our members make a lasting impression on the potential employer. In the future, PSU will move forward by establishing a temporary employment agency to better serve our community.

Investing
-

-
Tax Planning
-
Retirement Planning
These five areas are critical to shaping your personal financial planning.
Here are the 5 aspects of a complete financial picture:

-
Investing: Investing is important to grow money so that you can achieve what you aspire.
-
Financial Protection: Now, financial protection through insurance ensures you and your family are able to sail through during the hard times.
-
Tax Planning: With proper tax planning, i.e. making adequate expenditure/investment, you can bring down your taxable income, eventually saving a lot of money every year.

#13 - Mentally Fitness Program
Developing the skills for better mental fitness can benefit you and everyone around you.
-
Being Present - In a mindful state, we can better retain information, listen, and be aware of, but not sabotaged by, distractions. This results in more enjoyment of life and better relationships and the ability to relate to others.
-
The Ability To Respond, Not React - When we have more control over our automatic thoughts, we can choose to respond in a more rational and less emotive way. This improves our relationships and the way we think about the world and preserves more options in any environment.
-
Improved Cognitive Function - Better focus, processing speed, memory, concentration, time management, and communication have a positive impact, personally and professionally. Relationships improve as a result of remembering information about friends and family, important events, and being on time.
-
Increased Positive Emotions: Optimism - With increased awareness comes the ability to notice and reframe thoughts in more helpful ways. Kinder thoughts and compassion shape optimistic mindsets that lead to more positive behavior.
-
More Confidence - With optimism, our relationship with ourselves becomes stronger. Self-esteem and self-efficacy - the belief in our abilities - increase, and we may focus more on our strengths. Self-compassion and empathy increase as a result of practicing mindfulness.
-
Ability To Develop Positive Habits In All Areas Of Life - The need to form new, better-adapted habits never stops. Self-efficacy, mindfulness, and time management improve our ability to build habits.

#14 - Air Force / Navy / Army / Marines / Coast Guard Program
Program Mission
To help transform the lives of my fellow military veterans and their families. Many such as I have become victims of a system that has forgotten about our contributions to the United States of America. We endeavor to provide "Mentoring" services to these outstanding "Veterans" and their "Families" when called upon.
Program Vision
To Help my fellow "Veterans" put on their "Battle Dress Uniforms" (BDU) so that they will be better equipped can fight a "Spiritual Battle".
Ephesians 6:12, "For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places."
Program Core Values
At PSU, our 7-Core Values are more than just words. They represent the person of Dr. Carlos N. Moore as well as represent the "Battle Dressed Uniform" as soldiers in God's Army.
1. Helmet Of Salvation - (The Word of God). When a soldier suited up for battle, the helmet was the last piece of armor to go on. It was the final act of readiness in preparation for combat. A helmet was vital for survival, protecting the brain, the command station for the rest of the body. If the head was badly damaged, the rest of the armor would be of little use.
2. Breast Plate Of Righteousness - (refers to the righteousness purchased for us by Jesus at the cross). A typical armed soldier wore a breastplate made of bronze or chain mail. It covered the vital organs, namely, the heart, and was fitted with loops or buckles that attached it to a thick belt. If the belt was loosened, the breastplate slipped right off.
3. Belt Of Truth - (holds the sword of the Spirit, linking truth and the Word of God because the Word of God is truth). It was a thick, heavy leather and metal band with a protective piece hanging down from the front of it. The belt held the soldier’s sword and other weapons.
4. Shoes Of Peace - (ready with the gospel of peace, we live with the understanding that we are continually under attack from Satan). The word readiness implies constant vigilance. A victorious soldier had to be prepared for battle. He had to have studied his enemy’s strategy, be confident in his own strategy, and have his feet firmly planted so that he could hold his ground when the attacks came. A soldier’s battle shoes were studded with nails or spikes, like cleats, to help him keep his balance in combat. He knew that, if he lost his footing and went down, it wouldn’t matter how great the rest of his armor was; the enemy had him.
5. Sword Of The Spirit - (the word of God). The sword is both an offensive and defensive weapon used by soldiers or warriors.
6. Shield Of Faith - (a Christian who takes up the shield of faith identifies himself as a foot soldier who serves the Commander of the Lord’s army). The Roman shield of the time was called a scutum. This type of shield was as large as a door and would cover the warrior entirely. Such a shield was not just defensive but could also be used to push opponents. When fighting as a group, a phalanx of soldiers could position their shields so as to form an enclosure around themselves, called a testudo (“tortoise”). This was especially helpful to protect against arrows launched from the walls of cities they were attacking. Other types of shields were often made of wood and then covered in hide, when wet, could extinguish flaming arrows.
7. Prayer - We are told to pray in the Spirit (that is, with the mind of Christ, with His heart and His priorities) in addition to wearing the full armor of God.
